Thank you to Mr. Stephen Tsang, Chair of the Edmonton Chinese Bilingual Education Association for the invitation to attend today’s celebration at Bonnie Doon Mall. This year of the Rooster holds special significance as it will be the start of celebrations for the 35th anniversary of Edmonton’s Chinese Bilingual Program and the ECBEA.

Chinese history and culture was showcased through music, performances, dances, drumming, traditional lion and dragon dances, carnival games, arts and crafts with the involvement of Chinese bilingual schools and other community organizations.

Hillcrest School Council Meeting January 19, 2017

20, Jan, 2017|Comments Off on Hillcrest School Council Meeting January 19, 2017

Thanks to acting Chair Lori, rest of Council, and Principal Fonseca for letting me join the meeting.  Principal Fonseca reported on the numerous after school activities and clubs, the Grade 9 science trip to Bamfield, Vancouver Island, and the trip to China.  He also mentioned the tutorial support being provided through the House of Learning.  Open House is March 9.

One question from parents for the District, Rio and Quesnell students are designated to Patricia Heights for elementary, but are designated to Laurier Heights junior high rather than Hillcrest as the other Pat Heights students.  Is this something the District could look at? I will look into this.

Principal Kope also discussed upcoming staff professional development for First Nations, Metis, and Inuit education for all students.  We also discussed emergent repairs for the school.

Thanks to Co-Chairs Leanne and Jason, rest of Council, and Principal Kroeker for letting me participate in tonight’s meeting.  It was great to learn that the District was able to provide funding towards the painting and the sensory room.  I am interested to learn more about MAK’s development of a problem-solving mathematics interim assessment, and look forward to the Parent Night on Numeracy.  I also appreciated the feedback about the feasibility of working with a single bank to see if we collectively could realize higher interest rates.  Congrats on raising $5609 for E4C through the Santa’s Workshop!

Thanks to Co-Chairs Shelley and Selby, rest of Council, and Principal Allen for the opportunity to participate in tonight’s meeting.  I enjoyed learning about the proposed Grade 6 leadership camp to assist the transition to junior high, and the mindfulness initiative.  This research based initiative is designed to help all students to focus, self regulate their behavior and increase empathy.  I was pleased to learn that the traffic safety situation has improved with investments by the City of Edmonton, although more work is needed.

Thanks to Chair Maureen, the rest of council, and Principal Shen for allowing me to participate in tonight’s Council meeting.  I was interested to learn of the numerous after school programs , most sponsored by community partners, that Lynnwood School offers, including E2 Young Engineer Club, Kids Now leadership Program, Art Mentors, and the Roving Chess-Nut chess club.  Lots of good work planned for Random Acts of Kindness Week.  We also briefly chatted about the feasibility of seeking better bank interest by working with a single bank.

Thanks to Council and Principal Marshall for permitting me to join a portion of tonight’s Council meeting.  I found the presentation by First Nations Inuit and Metis support teacher Melissa S. very informative in explaining behavioral, academic, and social /emotional growth strategies and the various resources supporting these strategies.

We also had some dialogue concerning a parent question of how teaching of gender and sexuality will be woven into the new curriculum, with my commitment to source a contact within Alberta Education to respond to this question.

Thanks to Chair Lis, the rest of Council, and Principal Burns for the warm welcome and for the opportunity to provide an update.  I appreciated hearing Principal Burns comprehensive report, and the discussion about implementing the See Saw account and SchoolInterviews.ca. Despite a very cold night, Council was out in force and planning numerous school events.  Nice to see the strong bonds of friendship nurtured by serving together on Council.
